SHOPPERS AID or CHEAT SHEETS.

NO, you don't have to print off the whole lot !!

                    Hit Counter

These tables show the conversion of rupiah back into Australian dollars,  but instead of A$ they could be converting back into Polynesian Seashells, Irish Punts, American Dollars or anything else as long as you select the right exchange rate (the figures in the top row of each table and shaded yellow in the first table) for your own particular currency.   If the exchange rate is correct for your currency the answers for any rupiah value will also be correct for your currency.

You only need to print off perhaps two rows which cover the exchange rates you expect to get while you're on holidays.

I like this format because it converts rupiah back into your own currency. When you're in Bali you will be bargaining in rupiah so they come first in the tables and by checking the Cheat Sheet you can see the value in your own familiar monetary terms.

I’ve included 100 Rupiah conversions only to remind you that if you’re haggling in Rp100 amounts then you’re getting high blood pressure over just 3 cents at the most – and it’s just not worth it.

If you’d like more information about Bali in particular you will find our web pages of interest. Use this link or copy and paste the address into the Address Bar in your Web Browser – http://www.filosbali.net.  You will find the left hand column is an index to all of the contents. There is a lot of information in the 'Bali Travel Forum Recommendations' particularly.

HOW DO I USE IT ???

If the  exchange rate is 5,400 Rp to the dollar or thereabouts - -

Example 1 : A beach massage is offered for Rp75,000. That is the equivalent of A$13.89 – (Get the values for 50,000 and 25,000 from the 5,400 table and add them together - $9.26 + $4.63 + $13.89.).

Now in Oz you would think that you had a great deal but you know that the Bali price should be much lower so you offer Rp10,000 (A$1.85).

Much laughter follows with comments like, “You Funnneee! You make me Bunkroot !”

Eventually however the price gets down (or up) to Rp25,000. That is the equivalent of A$4.63 and you know that this is a GOOD price even in Bali, although the massage may not be too good.

Example 2 : A three piece double breasted suit, tailored to measure from Italian material with 2 pairs trousers is negotiated from Rp1,000,000 down to Rp 600,000. That is from A$185,18 down to A$111.11. ($18.52 + $92.59) and you know that’s a good price so you happily accept.

These two examples also highlight the differences that can occur when you are bargaining for services and when you are bargaining for goods.

It is fairly easy to do a really good deal on services but you are likely to find that the quality of the service only matches what  you are prepared to pay.  I recall a massage on Nusa Dua beach that was bargained down from the usual minimum of Rp45,000 to Rp25,000. The massage was later described as ' a feather light oil change’ and lasted only 15 minutes.

The usual Rp45,000 massage was still going strong after 30 minutes and special liniments were being used on all the sore spots.

It is more difficult to do a really good deal on goods, however, as the goods are a fixed and known quality (unless what you select is swapped for a cheaper product behind the counter as it is wrapped up for you) so the salesperson knows what they must get to clear a profit.

Print off only the strip (or the strips) that you think will cover the exchange rate that will be in force during the time of your stay but print off enough copies for at least two a week as handling, with the humidity and perspiration, tends to destroy printer paper rapidly.

Cut out the strips and fold them each 5 times zigzag fashion. Keep them in your purse or bum-bag. Alternatively, paste them in groups of 4 into the back pages of a Spirax #541 Note Pad or similar which will fit comfortably into purse, bum bag or shirt pocket.  You can use the pad to record the costs of various items for friends, or just for memories sake.

Perhaps an even better suggestion come from Lynne, who cut them to fit into the little plastic wallets from a business card holder and found that they easily lasted 12 days.

Each morning check the local exchange rate and re-fold the appropriate strip so that the rate nearest the official one is facing out and easily seen. If the rate is 4,976 then select the Rp5,000 strip. Notice that small variations from the official rate results in only a few cents difference in the conversion.

Remember to have a great holiday. – Don’t get all tensed up because someone bought a sun hat for Rp5,000 but you paid Rp5,500. Go to the Cheat Sheet and remind yourself how little  500 rupiah is really worth. Just think of it as having put food on the table for a family that night and feel good about it.
